City, County prepare for election
Voters will finally have their say when they go to the polls Tuesday for the general election. The polling site for City of Rice Lake residents is City Hall at 30 E. Eau Claire St.

The site is handicapped accessible. Voting hours are 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Free round-trip rides to the City Hall polling site are available through the city's shared ride taxi program. Call 234-6305 24 hours in advance to make arrangements for rides. Free transportation to polling sites for older people and the disabled is also available through the Barron County Aging and Disability Resource Center at 537-6225 or toll-free at 800-538-3031.

Absentee ballots are available at City Hall for residents unable to vote on Election Day. They can be picked up during normal City Hall hours weekdays from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

There are no races for city or county offices. There is a referendum about health care, and one state office is contested here where 7th Congressional District 38-year incumbent Dave Obey, a Democrat from Wausau, is challenged by Republican Dan Mielke of Rudolph, who is an organic farmer and businessman.

In addition to Barack Obama and John McCain, voters will find seven other presidential candidates on the ballot. They are Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente of the Wisconsin Green party; Bob Barr and Wayne A. Root of the Libertarian party; Brian Moore and Steward A. Alexander of the Socialist Party USA; Gloria Lariva and Robert Moses of the Party for Socialism and Liberation; Ralph Nader and Matt Gonzalez of the Independent Party; Chuck Baldwin and Darrell L. Castle of the Constitution Party; and Jeffrey J. Wamboldt and David J. Klimsch of the We, the People Party.

Mary Hubler of Rice Lake, who has been in the state Assembly continuously since she was first elected in 1984, is running without opposition for the 75th District seat.

At the county level, incumbent Democrat Angela Holmstrom Beranek is running without opposition for her district attorney's post. Incumbent DeeAnn Cook, a Republican, is running without opposition for her county clerk's post, and Yvonne Ritchie, a Republican, is running without opposition for her post as treasurer. Also running without opposition is incumbent Register of Deeds Joyce K. Kaseno, a Democrat.

Barron County voters will be asked to vote yes or no on an advisory referendum. That referendum asks "Shall the next state legislature enact legislation by December 31, 2009, that guarantees every Wisconsin resident affordable health care coverage as good as what is provided to state legislators and state officials?"

The referendum, placed on the ballot at the request of Citizen Action of Wisconsin, will also be on the ballot in Douglas, Dane, LaCrosse, Polk, Rusk and Washburn counties and several cities. It was approved for placement on Barron County ballots by the Barron County Board of Supervisors.
