| Mayor Quinn, DA discuss settlement | Rice Lake Mayor Romaine Quinn met with Washburn County District Attorney Mike Bitney on Tuesday, Aug. 31 to discuss charges of accepting an illegal campaign contribution.
An undisclosed settlement was proposed to the mayor, but has not yet been accepted, Bitney said.
Bitney said he had a "productive conversation" with Quinn, who was joined by his mother and his attorney.
"I think it's going to be resolved shortly," Bitney said.

Mayor Romaine Quinn has vetoed a resolution passed last week by the City Council.
In a related matter, the Barron County District Attorney has written a letter to city engineer Bruce Markgren advising him to stop appearing on behalf of private individuals who are appearing before the city Planning Commission. Markgren is also the president of Cooper Engineering. That story is on page 1.

Click on headline for full story Thursday, August 19, 2010 |  | | City asks judge to declare property a public nuisance | A complaint asking a judge to declare a Rice Lake man's property a public nuisance has been filed in Barron County Circuit Court.
The property at 23 Orchard Beach Lane is owned by Darrell Fredrickson, who resides at 410 Phipps St.
The complaint, which also asks the judge for permission to clean the property, was filed by city attorney Wayne Arnold July 27.
The Rice Lake City Council made a public nuisance finding of the property Oct. 13.
After giving the defendant "substantial time" to clean the property himself, the council reaffirmed at its regular meeting May 25 its desire that the property be cleaned.
